Internet telephony is emerging as a low cost alternative to traditional long distance calls considering that over 15 lakh overseas calls are made from India everyday. The total size of the Indian ISD market is estimated to be $ 1.5 billion (Rs. 7,500 crore) with a CAGR of 25% over the next 5 years. Frost & Sullivan projects that the global Retail Voice Over IP (VoIP) market will grow to $78 billion by 2007, a 142% compounded growth over revenues of $1.2 billion in 2000.

International Data Corporation, a market research firm, expects the Indian IP telephony market to grow at a CAGR of 119% to touch Rs. 13,000 crore by 2005. The market size for the year April 2002 to March 2003 is conservatively valued at Rs. 270 crore while optimistic projections during the same period are between Rs. 350-500 crore.

As per industry insiders, with VSNL logging more than Rs. 350 crore of ISD traffic from Mumbai itself, the IP telephony market for Mumbai should be around Rs. 14 crore with a healthy growth rate.
